Committees

As the Potomac Yard Arlington Civic Association continues to grow, committees provide a way for members to engage more deeply with the issues that affect our neighborhood.

Potomac Yard residents care about a wide range of topics including transportation, development, public space, infrastructure, and community planning. Committees allow interested members to focus on specific areas, conduct research, follow public processes, and develop familiarity with the policies and projects shaping the neighborhood.

Committees also play an important role in how the civic association develops positions on public matters. County and state stakeholders frequently seek input from civic associations affected by policy decisions. Recent examples include the Route 1 redesign and the construction of the Long Bridge.

Before the association takes an official position on an issue, the relevant committee serves as the first step in the process. Committees research the topic, track developments, and present recommendations to the membership for discussion and consideration. This helps ensure that the association’s positions are informed, credible, and reflective of community priorities.

Transportation and Infrastructure Committee

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee focuses on mobility, safety, and major infrastructure projects that shape how residents move through and around Potomac Yard.

Current and anticipated focus areas include:

  • Route 1 multimodal redesign
  • Improving street striping and roadway markings
  • Safety concerns related to drivers traveling the wrong direction on South Glebe, including the dedicated bus lane
  • Pedestrian crossing safety on Route 1
  • Bicycle safety and the risks created by high speed vehicle traffic
  • Speeding concerns on Route 1, including traffic entering from the highway
  • Rail noise impacts and the need for sound abatement infrastructure following recent tree removal and rail related construction

Zoning, Planning, and Open Space Committee

The Zoning, Planning, and Open Spaces Committee focuses on land use, development, neighborhood planning, and the public spaces that support quality of life in Potomac Yard.

Current and anticipated focus areas include:

  • The commercial space vacated by Harris Teeter and options for future tenants
  • Zoning considerations for the Eclipse and surrounding commercial space, including mixed use district rules and potential tenant by right options
  • Outreach to prospective grocery tenants, including reported contact with Publix and the indication that the location is under consideration
  • Ways to gather resident input at scale, including the idea of a public survey that could be shared through the PYACA website, partner websites, and other outreach channels
  • Steps that may be needed to make the commercial property more attractive to potential tenants
  • Alternate retail locations that could support a grocery tenant, including the Hazel and Azure retail space
  • Learning from other neighborhoods by contacting civic associations that have also lost Harris Teeter locations and understanding what strategies they pursued

Community Engagement Committee

This committee focuses on building community connection through neighborhood events, resident engagement, and shared experiences. The goal is to strengthen relationships among neighbors, foster a sense of belonging, and create opportunities for residents to connect beyond meetings and policy discussions.

Potomac Yard is growing and evolving. This committee helps ensure that as our neighborhood develops, our sense of community grows with it.

Current and anticipated focus areas include:

  • Planning neighborhood gatherings and social events
  • Supporting community building activities for families, individuals, and new residents
  • Coordinating volunteer opportunities and service initiatives
  • Welcoming new residents and helping them learn about the civic association
  • Partnering with nearby civic associations and local organizations on joint events
  • Promoting community engagement through surveys, outreach efforts, and online communication

How to Join a Committee

Committee participation is open to civic association members.

If you would like to join one of these committees, please contact PYACA through the Contact page and indicate which committee you are interested in.
